    A Silvaze story

She sighed as she walked down the street on a cold winter’s night. It was New Year’s eve. She held her arms hugging herself and sinking low into her lilac faux fur coat, closing her eyes and mulling over how she had no one to spend it with. All of her friends were busy. Amy had last minute shopping to do. Rouge was on a jewelry heist. Sonic was out probably running with Tails. Cream was home with her mother. Silver… She hadn’t heard from him for days. He seemed totally cut off from her. It was a sad thought for her, but- it was the truth.

Blaze opened her eyes as a chilling wind brushed against her soft fur. Her topaz orbs were glossy and bright, staring into the dark street in front of her, illuminated softly with holiday lanterns and the cool refreshing moon. She sighed once again, feeling even more depressed as another breeze shook her fur and gave her shivers. “Well.. I suppose it’s getting late.” She spoke softly to herself, lowering her eyelids and starting to head back home. Her footsteps echoed silently as she stepped along, and that along with the wind and occasional laugh of joyous partiers was all to be heard to her that night.

Suddenly, Blaze’s ears perked up as a sound was heard just behind her. She turned quickly behind her, hoping to find whatever or whoever was making the click of footsteps. A figure in a dark gray coat and light blue scarf jumped, startled. Two golden orbs stared back at her, shocked that she heard them so easily. They gleamed with fear and concern, but slowly transitioned to relief when she was not angry with the owner of them. “...Hey Blaze…” He managed to get out nervously. He stepped a little closer, hoping that she would feel just as happy to see him as he was to see her. “Hm..?! Silver..?” She responded, narrowing her eyes trying to get a better look at them. “Yeah, hey…” he said with a gulp. “Silver!” she gasped ecstatically, and dashed his way and embraced him close with a hug. “I’ve missed you..!” The silver-grey hedgehog reddened at this, and slowly returned her embrace. “I missed you too…” He said as he closed his eyes.

She pulls away, and holding his shoulders smiles warmly. “I thought you may have been angry with me, or-” She realized what she had said, and what she was saying, and quickly pulled away from him completely. “S-sorry…” “No, it’s okay…” He puts a hand on her shoulder. She stares, her eyes full of wonder, her cheeks flustered pink. “I… You wanna spend this New Year’s eve together..? Well, I know we always have, but… Well I… I--” She cut him off, “Of course I would, Silver.” She smiles. He returns the gesture, and his face lights up. “Well, whaddya say we go somewhere? Like, maybe to a movie, or out to eat, or-” Once again, he is interrupted. “Come on.” She starts to walk off past him. He stares for a quick second, and follows quickly after. “So where are we going?” He asks her as he catches up. “I’m not too sure, I’m just walking around.” she chuckles and looks over at him. “Hm.” he quietly obliges, and walks along with her.

After a while, the two had reached the middle of town, a circle of small business buildings, which were warmly lit on the insides. In the center a large fountain stood, and many lanterns and stone benches surrounded it. The moon cast magical white beams down onto them, and mixed with the reflections of the lantern’s fire on the water, creating a stunning scene. Blaze stood silently taking in the magical beauty that was all around her. Silver stared also, but after a little bit, he looked over to Blaze. Her bright yellow eyes sparkled with anticipation, and a smile that could light up the whole world shone on her face. He turned pink at this, and gulped trying to look away. ‘She looks so beautiful…’ he thought to himself. He glanced over once more, seeing that she was not paying attention. Looking again, he lowered his gaze to where her hand hung, and watched its movements for a moment before looking back to the fountain again.

His fingers twitched. He started to sweat bullets. He was extremely nervous. ‘Just do it, dummy!’ he pushed himself. He gulped and shut his eyes tight, this was going to be difficult. … “Are you okay, Silver?” He jolted his eyes open, and darted his eyes to Blaze’s. She looked concerned, worried for him. ‘She must have seen it..’ he thought to himself. “Uhh, yeah, I’m alright! Hahaha!” he closed his eyes again, laughed nervously, and tried to be convincing. “Uhm, okay then..” she said awkwardly, and turned her attention again to the fountain.

Silver took a handkerchief out of his coat pocket and wiped his forehead. ‘Why does she have to be so… cute..?’ he questioned to himself. He put away the handkerchief and again looked to her hand. ‘It’s now or never, Silver..” he told himself. Slowly, he reached out his hand. He watched silently and nervously. The suspense was killing him; if anything messed this up, it could be the end of the world! “Silver, look!” Blaze gasped happily, pointing up towards the midnight blue hued sky. Silver saddened, and looked up into the dark sky. Small, white flakes were slowly making their way downwards toward them. They were taking their time, and looking quite good at it as well. “Aren’t they beautiful?” she said breathless. Her hands were clamped together over her chest as she beheld this breathtaking sight in awe.

“..Yeah.” Silver said blandly. “What’s wrong?” she looked at him, seemingly forgetting what was so mesmerizing to her just a few seconds ago. “Huh? I’m okay.” Silver lied. “No, you’re not. Please tell me what’s wrong?” she was filled with worry and concern, her eyes showed it. Silver stared into them, and was lost. He really wanted to tell her now, how he really felt, but that one heart-shattering fear always kept him from it; rejection. What if she didn’t feel the same way? What if she ran away, and avoided him? What if… she never spoke to him again? No, he just couldn’t tell her, it was as simple as that. It wasn't anything serious anyways. At least, that’s what he kept telling himself. He had it engraved in his mind, ‘We’re just friends, nothing more and nothing less.’ Of course, he wanted it to be something more. He wanted it to be something special. Something beautiful. Something forever.

“Silver?” he woke up from his thoughts, and met with reality once again. “Tell me what’s wrong, Silver.” she prodded him once again. “...It’s nothing. I’m fine, Blaze. Really!” he stared into her eyes, wanting her to let this go. “... Well, alright then. But if something is bothering you, just tell me! Ok?” she smiled at him. He looks down and blushes “O-okay Blaze…” she laughs. “Heh, you’re so naive.” “Huh?” he looks at her once again. She laughs. Silver looks away, and looks around. The place is covered in a thin layer of snow now, which the moon’s shine gleams nicely against. Blaze follows his gaze, and stares at the fountain with snow on and around it. She sighs contently. Silver looks over, “What?” “Hm? Oh, nothing.” she continues to stare, her tail swishing back and forth. “Hm.” He looks up, then back at her hands, which are now behind her back. ‘Ah well…’ he sighs in defeat. He looks back up to the city, and suddenly thinks about what time it may be, and looks to the clock. 11:45. Wait, 11:45?! ‘It’s almost midnight!’ he thinks frantically. “Hey, Blaze-” he pauses. “Hm, what is it Silver?” she looks over. “Ah-” midnight. Midnight on New Year’s eve. That means… “Silver?” Aren’t you supposed to… “Silver??” he gulps. “Silver!” he snaps his head up from his thoughts. “Blaze!” he stares at her wide eyed. “Did you want to tell me something?” she asks suspiciously. “Ah- nevermind, it doesn’t matter.” “No, what is it?” he stays quiet. She sighs and looks away. ‘Great, look what you did you idiot..’ he degrades himself in his thoughts. ‘Now what do I do?’ he looks to the ground, but saw a flicker of something white first; her hands, they’re beside her again! His eyes widen, this was another chance..!

‘If I’m going to get that to happen, this has to happen first...’ he thinks to himself in hope. Slowly and carefully, ever so carefully, he reaches his shaky hand out to her silk laden one. “Hey Blaze, look at that there.” he looks up at the sky, where fireworks mix with snow and makes the snow glisten in greens, reds, yellows, purples, blues, oranges, pinks. At that moment, he finally works up the courage to do it. He takes her hand in his, and intertwines his with hers. His face turns all kinds of red and pink at the warmth and softness of her small hand. She feels the hold and blushes instantly, then looks to Silver. “Silver..?” she stares into his eyes. He gulps. “Y-yeah Blaze..?” he stutters, absolutely nervous. She smiles, and steps closer to him, gripping his hand to return the hold. He blushes more, darker, but stays put. The wind blows cool icicle-like winds into them, causing shivers to affect them both. “It’s c-cold..” Blaze chatters out. Silver blushes more, and puts his other arm around her, pulling her close. “I-is this better..?” he stutters out, and not because of the cold. Blaze’s face reddens, and she snuggles close to him. “Much better… Thanks, Silver.” she smiles. He smiles back, and looks up at the snow falling heavier with every second.

They stay like that for a while, until suddenly, Silver remembers. ‘Oh no-! What time is it..?!’ he looks at the clock quickly; 11:58. 11:58?!! He only had two minutes?! Unbelievable! ‘How am I going to do this in two minutes?!’ he frantically raced through his thoughts, trying to figure out some way to do this right. Another minute passes. 11:59. Blaze was still snuggled up to his chest. Before long all of his efforts would be wasted. He looked down at her. “Ehm…” she looks up. “Silver?” their eyes meet. Silver blushes. ‘Well, it’s now or never..!’ he builds his courage within himself. “Uhm, Blaze? I have to tell you something, but I think it would be more effectively conveyed if I showed you instead, is that okay..?” he gulped. This was it, the moment of truth. “Hm? Sure, go ahead.” he smiled a little, his eyelids lowered. “Well…” Just then, as if on cue, the enormous city clock rang. ‘Come on, just do it!!’ he was frantic, but had to do it right. He pulled her close, lowered his eyes, put one hand on her lower back, one on her upper back, and leaned in and pressed his lips to hers. He blushed furiously. Her eyes widened, and she was utterly surprised at this, but eventually, she lowered her eyes, and closed them completely, and kissed him back. She held him close, as did he with her, and they were lost in time in that one moment, the snow dancing around them, the clock ringing loudly, the wind blowing all through their hair- and yet all they cared about in that one moment was for each other.

Just as they parted, the clock had ringed its last, and they stared into each other’s eyes affectionately. He was very nervous, and sweating with anxiety and heat. She was surprised to the point of going mute for the time being. So they just stood there, staring into each other’s golden orbs. … “Silver…” he blinks. “B-Blaze?” “...I really.. I really like you…” he blinks again. Did she just say that..? “B-B-Blaze??!” “I was afraid to tell you… I was afraid of being rejected because you wouldn’t feel the same way… I was afraid of… being alone again…  But, now I know that you do feel the same and… I’m… so glad…” she looks down, blushing fiercely. “Blaze…” he smiles sympathetically. “I felt the same way… I thought you might not ever talk to me again or something, and it really scared me. I didn’t want to lose you, or to ruin this friendship because I told you I lo-” he pauses. “You, what?” “...Because I love you…” silence.  “...I had suspected it would go away, but after awhile, it just... didn't...” silence. “... Silver…” she hugs him. “I’ve felt the same…” ‘...what? She… feels the same about me..?’ he couldn’t believe it. He must have misheard her. That had to be it! “You… what..?” he choked out. She chuckled. “I said I feel the same way, silly.” she said as she playfully punched his shoulder. He rubs his shoulder, laughing nervously. “Heheh.. ...Wait, y-you do?!” his eyes widened. ‘How could she love someone like me, a big oaf?’ he silently questioned. She laughs again. “How about if I just show you?” she closes her eyes and proceeds to peck him softly on his lips. She giggles a little bit. “Now you know, Silver. Hah, so naive.” she then turns and looks up at the white and midnight blue checkered sky. Silver blushes furiously.

‘She… loves me back…’

“Happy New Years, Blaze.” he told her with a smile.
